LO1: InDesign introduction

This is the contents page for the 2010 July issue of Metal Hammer. I like this contents page because it is using the house style to appropriately connote the themes of the Metal genre.

I also like the way that the images are anchored with numbers so you can pick one out and go straight to that page. The actual contents with more information is at the side and I like this because you can read what the articles are actually about before going straight to them.

To pastiche this contents page I shall be using Adobe InDesign which is a desktop publishing program - a program designed to create print based products such as books or novels.

Key terms -

  • Columns - Any areas broken up by white space
  • White space - Any empty space
  • Margins - The border of the magazine
  • Gutter - The space between the columns
I used this dialog box when opening InDesign to create my desire specifications for my document.

Conventions of a contents page

  1. Information about the different articles. Sometimes this will have subheadings. For example; features, regulars and reviews.
  2. Photographs are used to attract you to a particular feature in the magazine.
  3. Page numbers are used to make it easier to navigate around the magazine.
  4. Issue number/ date.
  5. Masthead is used to reinforce branding, genre and the house style.
  6. House style.
  7. Columns - Any areas broken up by white space.
